My Google Fiber Journey — Part 1

Currently I have AT&T fiber and absolutely love it, I don’t think I can actually recall when/if there has been an outage. I have had the service for over 2 years now at this point. I currently have the 1Gbps/1Gbps plan. My infrastructure at my house starts with my UDM-Pro from Unifi.

UDM-Pro (router)

I love this device, it is my current gateway. My AT&T Fiber connection comes Into my house and terminates in the ONT (basic media conversation device) and converts into a copper connection which is then plugged into my UDM-Pro. You might be asking yourself why and how I am not using my AT&T gateway that they provide. Net is it’s a horrible device, there is a limit on the number of open connections and the device eventually locks up and needs reboots. To avoid that there is multiple documented ways on bypassing the AT&T gateway and connecting directly to the AT&T ONT. Here is the method I used. There are many others but this seems to the be fastest and most reliable means without bridging any connections.

Current network architecture

Google Fiber is currently being installed in my neighborhood and I can’t wait for the day to sign up!
